Canadian Province Expands E-Waste Program

Alberta extends electronics recycling program.

Northern CARE, Maxus Technology partner to provide comprehensive electronic scrap recycling solutions for Alberta.

The ongoing expansion of electronics recycling solutions for residents of Alberta continued with the launch of a regional eWaste recycling program that facilitates collection and processing of eWaste in some of Alberta’s most remote communities.

Northern CARE will administer the program, providing pickup services and consolidation expertise to any community that wishes to sign on. Three collection hubs will collect electronic scrap from surrounding communities and ship full loads to Maxus for processing. Additionally, Maxus will provide consultation on the best methods for collecting e-scrap as well as marketing and logistics support. Maxus is a provincially approved eWaste processor under Alberta’s new electronics recycling program, launched Feb. 1st.

Maxus also announced that it is offering a program that allows consumers to bring any old and non-functioning electronic product to any CompuSmart retail store in either Calgary, Alberta or Edmonton, Alberta.

The retail firm will accept computers, laptops, printers, monitors and television sets at no cost. The company will accept other types of electronics for a nominal fee, ranging from $1-$5.

The program is called  “Be CompuSmart.” It was launched in Calgary in October 2003 through a partnership between CompuSmart and Maxus Technology. Since then, more than 25,000 kilograms of eWaste have been collected.

Under Alberta’s new electronics recycling program, which came into effect on February 1st, these volumes are expected to increase considerably.
