The production of market pulp by Canadian mills posted a steep 23 percent drop for August. Figures from the Pulp and Paper Products Council show August production at 574,000 metric tons, compared to last August’s production figure of 742,000 metric tons.
The operating rate for the month plummeted to 69 percent of capacity, compared to last August’s operating rate of 90 percent of capacity.
For the first eight months production stands at 5.3737 million metric tons, a 13 percent drop from last year’s figures. The operating rate also continues to soften, with this year’s Jan.-Aug. figure at 83 percent of capacity, compared to last year’s eight-month operating rate average of 96 percent of capacity.
Shipment of market pulp also continues to soften. For August shipments dipped 6 percent to 639,000 metric tons, while shipments for the first eight months of the year declined an even sharper 12 percent to 5.451 million metric tons.Latest from Recycling Today
