The Canadian Competition Bureau is presently investigating allegations of collusion among certain Canadian paper merchants including Cascades Resources, a division of Cascades Fine Papers Group Inc.
The other companies receiving search warrants are Domtar Inc., Coast Paper Ltd., and Unisource Canada Inc. Cascades Fine Papers Group Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cascades Inc.
The allegation is based on the assumption that Cascades Resources and its competitors would have colluded to unduly reduce market competition between paper merchants in Canada.
The inquiry is proceeding under section 45 of the Competition Act, according to Reuters. The report continues, stating that “In similar cases, the investigation can center on allegations that companies fix prices of split markets in ways that unduly lessen competition or unreasonably enhance prices,” said Robert McCrone, assistant deputy commissioner of competition.Latest from Recycling Today
