Meeting to Address Vehicle Recycling in Canada

Two-day event will address ELV issues and bring together industry stakeholders.

A meeting hosted by Summerhill Impact and supported by Environment Canada will address best practices on the proper handling of end-of-life vehicles.

The invitation-only meeting, called “The National Forum on the Future of Vehicle Recycling in Canada,” will be held Nov. 29-30 in Mississauga, Ontario. This event aims to bring together national and international industry association experts, representatives of government, auto recyclers and manufacturers and public interest organizations. The two-day meeting will focus on ways the different groups can cooperatively develop best practices for recycling end-of-life vehicles (ELV) in Canada in an environmental manner.

According to Summerhill Impact, Nov. 29 will focus on the importance of a strong ELV management system, including successes and challenges of various provincial ELV management models within Canada, international best practices and approaches to ELV management and the current status and future of ELV management across Canada. Confirmed speakers include Kasper Zom of Auto Recycling Nederland Advisory; Minoru Goko, acting director of the Japan Automotive Recyclers Association and a professor at Nihon Automobile College; and Michael E. Wilson, CEO of the Automotive Recyclers Association.

The second day’s session will focus on how to successfully implement responsible ELV management within Canada, including stakeholder interests, goals and responsibilities, and the implementation of best practices.

Steve Fletcher, managing director of the Automotive Recyclers of Canada, says, "This forum is the culmination of our work with Environment Canada to create a legacy from the national vehicle scrappage program - Retire Your Ride. That legacy is the Canadian Auto Recyclers Environmental Code. We are working with the auto manufacturers, through their industry associations and sometimes directly with the OEM, to make the Code a starting point in the discussions to improve the regulatory framework for our industry and ensure all vehicles are managed properly."
