A Republican representative from Indiana is leading what she calls a bipartisan effort to repeal tariffs that have been placed on steel and aluminum imported from Canada and Mexico.
In a press release posted on the website of United States Congressional Rep. Jackie Walorski she says she has been leading a bipartisan group of colleagues in urging an end to steel and aluminum tariffs imposed on Canada and Mexico by President Donald J. Trump. The group of representatives say the tariffs contradict the recently signed United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) trade pact between the three countries.
In a letter also posted to the website, Walorski writes that American farmers, manufacturers, workers and consumers “will continue to be harmed, especially by the retaliatory measures [undertaken by Canada and Mexico] until an agreement is reached to lift the tariffs.” The letter was sent to the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee and to U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Robert Lighthizer.
Joined by U.S. Reps. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL), Darin LaHood (R-IL), Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) and Ron Kind (D-WI), the letter’s authors say lifting the steel and aluminum tariffs should be considered a high priority.
