The Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI), Washington, D.C., has reported that a total of 2.3 million aluminum beverage cans were collected by schools through a national recycling competition it sponsored. In a release heralding the inaugural Great American Can Roundup (GACR) – School Challenge -- the CMI says the program generated more than $34,000 for the participating schools.
The 2010-2011 GACR School Challenge marked the first year of an annual event that started on America Recycles Day, November 15, and ended on Earth Day, April 22. A total of 108 schools from 30 states, representing more than 56,000 students, competed in the contest.
