The Gillette News Record, Gillette, Wyoming, reports that officials in Campbell County, Wyoming, have voted on a new recycling program Thursday, June 30, 2016.
The vote follows a proposal put forth by the Gillette City Council that includes discontinuing the use of blue bags to commingle recyclables. Under the new proposal, all items will have to be separated by type.
The county said it would accept the following items:
- corrugated cardboard;
- aluminum;
- newsprint and magazines;
- unshredded office paper; and
- tin cans.
Plastics will not be accepted because of low prices and lack of storage space, according to the newspaper.
Additionally, Campbell County will no longer use haulers to collect recyclables. Residents and businesses will need to take their items to the Campbell County Amalgamated Recycling Enterprise (CARE) Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for residents only. Contaminated items will need to be transported to the dump, the newspaper says.
A definitive date for the program to begin has yet to be determined. Commissioner Mark Christensen suggested the county wait until concession could be made for plastic recyclables, though Public Works Director Kevin King proposed the program begin Sept. 5, to coincide with the end of Gillete’s blue bag recycling.
“At some point, we’ve got to make something happen,” King said at the meeting. “[If not], we’ll be sitting here next July in the same boat that we’re in today.”
