Camden Iron & Metal, which was acquired by EMR Ltd., several years ago, is looking to relocate its auto shredding operation from Philadelphia to Eddystone, Pa. The company has cited its wish to consolidate its shredding/processing operations and shipping business into one location as a key reason for relocating its operation.
Various published reports note that the company has an option on a collection of seven buildings in an industrial part of Eddystone. If the company is able to obtain the proper permitting to open at the new site, Camden Iron would be able to move its shredding operations from an outside venue to an indoor facility. By moving the shredder inside, the company says that any noise concerns would dissipate.
The site that is being looked at also will allow the company to have material loaded on barges. There also will be rail access at the facility. The company also says that it would look to build a 400-foot long, 100-foot wide pier that would allow the company to load as many as 30 vessels a year.
In an article recently published, the Philadelphia Inquirer notes that the company already has purchased an auto shredder for a new site, although the equipment is presently being stored until a location is found. The company is expected to have the shredder moved and installed within one year after finding and purchasing the new location for its operation.
The Inquirer notes that the company has said it has spent around $12 million, excluding the cost of the auto shredder, in finding a new location.
While the company has been seeking to relocate, residents of Eddystone have been going through public hearings about the benefits and drawbacks of the facility.
The article notes that a representative from Camden Iron said that a portion of the stormwater at the site would be reused to process the material, and there would be zero emissions from the site.
