Waste Management of Canada has officially opened what it says is the largest licensed private-sector recycling facility in Cambridge, Ontario. The 126,000-square-foot plant uses a single-stream recycling process, and will accept both industrial and municipal scrap materials.
Waste Management of Canada's new plant is equipped with a paper magnet, an optical sorter, electro-magnetic technology and various screen sorters, according to the company. The facility has been built to process up to 550,000 metric tons of recyclables per year.
“This new, state-of-the-art, single-stream recycling facility is the first of its kind for Waste Management of Canada," says Brad Muter, Waste Management’s area vice president for Eastern Canada. “Our goal was to target business customers in particular because they do not have as many recycling options,” says Muter, who adds that material collected for the facility will come principally from southwestern Ontario.
Waste Management of Canada, a subsidiary of Waste Management Inc., owns or operates 20 recycling facilities and 18 landfills.
