Calumet Steel Co. closed its production operations last week putting 200 employees out of work.
The 95-year-old company "could no longer compete in a steel market severely influenced by imported steel," said James Mertz, chairman of the privately owned minimill. He added that the tariffs imposed as a remedy to the flood of imported steel would be of no help to the company because they "don't do anything about NAFTA countries."
The minimill produced steel bars and light shapes consumed by the agricultural, construction, lawn care and automobile and industrial machinery manufacturing industries. The (Indiana) Times
