Call2Recycle certifies to R2:2013 Standard

Stewardship organization now certified to the latest version of the Responsible Recycling Practices Standard.

Call2Recycle, Atlanta, has announced that it has been certified to the latest version of the Responsible Recycling Practices (R2) Standard, R2:2013.

Call2Recycle was originally certified in 2012 under the R2:2008 standard. R2 is designed to ensure that certificate holders meet stringent requirements in areas of environmental and public health, worker health and safety.

Certification affirms that Call2Recycle’s management of the collection and distribution to downstream processors for the recycling of batteries and cellphones meets the R2 Standard requirements.

“On behalf of our collection partners, we are proud to be recognized with the R2:2013 certification for our comprehensive accountability and adherence to the highest standards covering environmental, health and safety and data security practices,” says Carl Smith, CEO and president of Call2Recycle. “This level of third-party validation sends a message to our industry stewards and municipal partners that Call2Recycle is committed to achieving the highest environmental standards in North America.”

Two prerequisites for achieving R2:2013 certification are meeting the requirements put forth in the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 14001 and OHSAS (Occupational Health & Safety Advisory Services) 18001 standards. These additional thresholds map out a framework that an organization can follow to set up an effective environmental management and occupational health and safety system, Call2Recycle says.

The R2 standard, which is administered by Sustainable Electronics Recycling International (SERI), Boulder, Colorado, is a set of voluntary principles and guidelines designed to promote and assess responsible practices for electronics recyclers. R2 requirements include a management system that is accountable for practices affecting worker health and safety, security, the environment and the downstream management, both domestically and internationally, of end-of-life electronic material and equipment, including cellphones and batteries.

Call2Recycle says it is funded by product manufacturers across the globe committed to the environmentally sound recycling of batteries and cellphones. The nonprofit organization claims to be North America’s first and largest consumer battery stewardship program.
