Call2Recycle reports that it has been approved as the first government-mandated consumer battery collection and recycling program in North America. The company says that it has been selected for implementation throughout the province by the British Columbia Ministry of the Environment.
In a release, Call2Recycle says that it was chosen based on its battery collection program that has been operational throughout Canada since 1997.
Call2Recycle is mobilizing program participants to start accepting household batteries by July 1. “Battery and product manufacturers continue to demonstrate their corporate responsibility by managing the proper disposal of batteries,” says Carl Smith, president and CEO of RBRC, which operates Call2Recycle. “Our program benefits all residents of British Columbia, where collections have grown an average of 24 percent each year. With the endorsement of the British Columbia government, we anticipate much heavier participation from residents and businesses in the coming years.”
Call2Recycle has collected more than 100,000 kilograms of rechargeable batteries in British Columbia since the program’s inception in 1997.
