The California Department of Conservation (DOC) hosted a recycling event at Sacramento’s Capitol Park Nov. 15 in celebrations of America Recycles Day.
Event participants included The California Integrated Waste Management Board, the city of Sacramento and the Sacramento Local Conservation Corps.
Attendees had the opportunity to learn more about state and local recycling and waste diversion programs, to view a variety of products made from recycled materials and to sign up for a free Recycling Starter Kit, which provides businesses, schools and other organizations with all the components they need to begin recycling.
In conjunction with the event, the DOC announced that California’s recycling rate had reached 65 percent for the first half of 2005. If the trend for the first half of 2005 continues, the state’s annual recycling rate will post an increase after 10 years of declines, according to the DOC.
“California’s recent recycling success is a direct result of the many programs designed to encourage bottle and can recycling,” DOC Director Bridgett Luther Thompson said. “Now we’re asking consumers to help close the loop on recycling by buying recycled material products to help stimulate the market for new recycled products.”
