The California Integrated Waste Management Board announced that the city of Ventura, Calif., has been approved for a grant of $170,000 to construct permanent hazardous waste collection facility and increase outreach
“The majority of grant funds will be used to construct a permanent hazardous waste collection facility at Gold Coast Recycling,” said Environmental Services Specialist Joe Yahner. “The city currently conducts four HHW events each year at Gold Coast Recycling, collecting more than 100,000 pounds of household hazardous waste from more than 1,000 participants. Used motor oil and paint are the most common items collected. “
“Operating a permanent facility will allow the City to conduct monthly events, increasing both the number of participants and hazardous materials collected,” Yahner continued. “In addition, the city will use grant funds to conduct biannual electronic waste collection events, collect HHW from elderly and homebound residents, increase HHW outreach and education, particularly to Spanish speaking residents, and fund staff time to manage and maintain the permanent facility.”
The city also announced that the city will hold a HHW collection event Oct. 23. At that time the city will provide $150 in disposal assistance to small businesses that generate less than 27 gallons or 220 pounds of hazardous waste.
