The city of Santa Clarita’s diaper recycling program is under discussion to be halted. The program, which was piloted to around 225 houses for the past nine months, was presented to the Santa Clarita City Council Aug. 26. The council opted to vote on whether to halt the program until the next city council meeting in September.
The program is being run by Knowaste, a Canadian-based company specializing in recycling of diapers. The program began last November, and was much ballyhooed as a way to reduce the amount of solid waste being shipped to landfills. However, according to local press reports one of the biggest issues has been the high cost of recycling the diapers. According to the press report, the program costs more than $1,800 per ton to recycle the diapers.Latest from Recycling Today
