California Cities Wrangle Over Wood Recycler

Superior Court is expected to hear case over California Wood early this month.

The Ventura City Council announced its support for a temporary extension of California Wood Product’s green waste mulching and processing operation for 12 months or until the company, located in Ventura, Calif., is able to acquire permits for a new site.

However, according to local press reports the city of Oxnard, which is next to Ventura, had earlier voted to request that the Superior Court have the recycling operation close immediately.

The City Council, in a special meeting March 29th, also authorized the mayor of the city or a designee to comment either verbally or in writing on the city’s behalf in support of California Wood’s requested time extension at the Ventura County Superior Court hearing, scheduled for April 5.

In its decision to support Cal Wood, the city noted that last May the Ventura County Superior Court approved a stiulated agreement allowing for the operation of California Wood Products until the company could acquire all the permits to operate at an alternative location.

While the company hoped to have all the permits in place and be able to move by this May, the company has determined it would be unable to meet the deadline.

In fact, according to a summary by Ventura, Cal Wood estimates the permitting process will take an additional 12 months.

If the company is unable to receive the extension until it could receive all its operating permits, Ventura would be forced to find an alternate site to handle the city’s green waste until the new site is open, likely increasing the costs.
