C&D Landfill’s Expansion Faces Opposition in Illinois

Citizens’ group voices concerns about project.

Waste Management has applied to expand a construction and demolition debris landfill in Joliet, Ill., according to a report in the Herald News (Joliet, Ill.).

The proposal has met some opposition from local residents, particularly a Lockport, Ill.-based environmental group called Citizens Against Ruining the Environment (CARE).

Waste Management has agreed to cap a nearby gypsum pile if it is allowed to expand the adjacent landfill, which would accept C&D debris from a 10-county area, according to the report.
