The Alachua County Commission in
The county’s Growth Management Department had recommended denial of the permit to build the landfill because the proposed site was home to a species of gopher tortoises, according to the report.
The site is part of a larger landfill owned by Waste Pro that is used for clean debris. While the company included space to be set aside as a tortoise conservation area, the county commission decided the space did not include a large enough buffer between the spaces.
Residents also expressed concerns over the proposed 100-foot height of the materials.
