Burrtec Waste Industries will have its proposed material recovery facility up for debate at the upcoming Santa Clarita, Calif., Planning Commission meeting. The meeting is scheduled for Oct. 18th.

The company presently has the franchise agreement to handle the commercial collection program for the city of around 165,000 people. The company has performed the collection since August, 2004. At the present time Burrtec ships the recyclables to another facility in Sun Valley, Calif.
According to a representative with the city of Santa Clarita, the facility will be around 150,000 square feet, with roughly 75,000 square feet dedicated to the MRF; the rest of the space will be used for the transfer station.
According to a spokesman for the city’s Environmental Services division ,the city is seeking to have the MRF built to allow the city to reach the recovery levels mandated by California’s AB939. The city feels that locating a MRF in the city will give Santa Clarita better control over what is being collected and processed.
The company’s original location was nixed due to railroad crossing close to the site. This newest proposed plant, estimated to be more than 175,000 square feet, would be located in an industrial park region of the city.
According to local press reports the facility would be capable of handling as much as 2,000 tons of material each day, and would handle both residential and commercial material.
