Brazilian Steel Company Starts Recycling Plant

Brazil's Metalic do Nordeste, backed by Rio de Janeiro-based steelmaker CSN, has set up Reciclaco - a Maracanau-based company focused on recycling steel beverage cans.

The decision was made after results of a survey conducted by Environmental Resources Management last August showed that steel beverage can collection rates rose from 27 percent in 2000 to 41 percent in July 2001. The current rate is close to 51 percent.

For this year, Reciclaco aims to collect some 73 percent of cans distributed throughout the country.

In the northeast region, steelmaker Gerdau is the main scrap iron buyer, which works jointly with Reciclaco. Bnamericas.com
