BlueScope Steel has agreed to purchase several pieces of equipment from Italian steel mill equipment and technology provider Danieli & C. S.p.A. to be installed at the BlueScope Steel North Star electric arc furnace (EAF) mill in Delta, Ohio.

That recycled-content steel mill hosted a $700 million melt shop capacity expansion project earlier this decade. Australia-based BlueScope Steel Ltd. says the northwest Ohio mill now has the capacity to produce 850,000 metric tons of hot-rolled steel coils annually.

Danieli has been tasked with modernizing the original run-out table laminar cooling system and provide other new equipment at the mill.

The additional equipment includes a new down coiler No. 3 that is planned to be installed downstream of the two original coilers supplied in 1995.

The capital expenditures are planned as ways to further debottleneck the mill and support the plant’s increased production capacity targets, according to Danieli, which was the original supplier of the Delta hot strip mill.

“These projects showcase commitment to innovation, efficiency and sustainability in steel production,” Danieli says.

The projects are expected to be complete by the end of the first quarter of 2027 and will some of the work timed to coincide with three scheduled outages at the mill.
