Blue Star Recyclers, a Denver-based nonprofit company that recycles obsolete electronics and works with people with disabilities, has announced plans to open a new facility.
The expansion has been made possible with a $250,000 grant from the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation (MEAF), the corporate foundation of the Mitsubishi Electric group companies in the United States. The foundation invests in strategies to empower youth with disabilities to lead productive lives.
While Blue Star has yet to decide on a location for its new recycling facility, finalists for the location include Atlanta, Chicago and Cincinnati.
Last year, MEAF supported Blue Star Recyclers with an initial grant to evaluate the best ways to replicate and expand Blue Star’s mission of employing people with autism and other disabilities. The research examined 27 U.S. cities and conducted feasibility studies in 12 markets for opportunities to replicate Blue Star operations beyond its two original locations in Colorado: Denver and Colorado Springs.
