Blaze engulfs Maryland recycling facility

A two-alarm fire that broke out Saturday night, Jan. 26, at a recycling facility in Cheverly, Maryland, has caused $8 million in damage.

Firefighters arrived at World Recycling Inc. at 6:30 p.m. and continued to work through Sunday night to control the “deep-seated” blaze, according to Mark Brady, the spokesperson for Prince George’s County Fire Department.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury in fighting the fire, the department said. There were no reports of injuries of anyone inside the building.

As firefighters evacuated the building and set up operations outside the perimeter, flames engulfed most of the facility, causing the roof and building to “partially collapse.”

The cause is under investigation, and the estimated damage is $8 million, with a “majority of the loss being machinery,” Brady said.

World Recycling Vice President Doug Williams was unavailable for comment. According to its website, the company provides paper, cardboard, pallet and electronics recycling, as well as shredding and waste services, in the Washington metropolitan area.
