Blancco Introduces SSD Wipe Feature

Product responds to growing netbook market.

Joensuu, Finland-based Blancco, a provider of data erasure solutions, now supports solid state drive (SSD) erasure within its family of certified data erasure products. “The newly released software positions Blancco to address current and future data security and disk wipe requirements for the increasingly popular hardware category,” according to a press release from the company.

The rapidly growing netbook market has fueled increased use of small, lightweight SSDs. Research firm Gartner estimates that netbook sales will reach nearly 8 million in 2009, rising to 50 million by 2012. Because they consume half the power of high-RPM hard disk drives (HDDs), SSDs also are a recognized alternative in certain data center applications for cost control and environmental reasons. The research firm iSupply finds that SSDs could potentially replace 10 percent of data center HDDs within the next four years and up to 40 percent by 2012, resulting in considerable power savings for these facilities.

“With support of data erasure for SSDs, Blancco recognizes the long-term impact of SSD technology in companies that purchase netbooks for employee use and in mass storage environments like data centers,” says Kim Väisänen, Blancco CEO. “Our data erasure products will enable the safest reuse or disposal of SSDs by businesses, both in-house and with assistance from third-party information technology asset disposal (ITAD) providers who employ our disk overwriting software.”

Blancco says its SSD erasure feature incorporates the most recent standards for flash media issued by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), including U.S. DOD Sanitizing (DOD 5220.22-M); Navy Staff Office Publication (NAVSO P-5239-26) – Top Secret; and Navy Staff Office Publication (NAVSO P-5239-26) – Secret or Confidential.
