The Finnish data erasure company Blancco has opened an office in Kaula Lumpur, Malaysia. The new office is the company’s first in Southeast Asia.
According to Blancco, the new office opening marks a significant growth milestone for the company, which continues to expand its global footprint. Blancco says it has been growing nearly 25 percent per year for the last five years.
“There is an increasing demand for secure data erasure in Southeast Asia as awareness grows and legislative initiatives continue to focus a spotlight on the use of personal information for commercial purposes,” says Alan Puah, managing director for Blancco Southeast Asia. “The Malaysian Personal Data Protection Act was passed in 2010 and is scheduled to be effective Jan. 1, 2013, further heightening the need for proper data erasure solutions and practices throughout the country.”
Puah notes that Singapore also has passed a Personal Data Protection Act to regulate the collection, use, disclosure and retention of personal data and to impose obligations on how businesses manage and dispose of that data as well as the retention period for the information. “This is in keeping with rising awareness in Asia of the importance of data protection,” he says. “In the past two years, Taiwan and India have passed data protection legislation and Hong Kong has updated its personal data privacy laws.”
