Blancco Technology Group, Joensuu, Finland, and Carbon Neutral Technology Corp, Ontario, are working together to launch a new calculator that can determine the carbon credit and cash value for information technology (IT) equipment.
Blancco focuses on data erasure, while CO2Neutral is an IT asset disposition (ITAD) company that focuses on sustainability.
The new Data Erasure Carbon Credits Calculator will help companies in both the U.S. and Canada dispose of old IT equipment responsibly. It works by allowing organizations to enter details about their equipment, and they’re given an estimated value and the number of carbon credits they’d receive if they opted for reuse instead of recycling the items. Depending on what those items are worth, that could lower or eliminate the cost to erase their data entirely, the companies say.
Once the items are safely wiped and ready for reuse, a company earns carbon credits that can be used to offset its carbon emissions, working to get the company to carbon neutral.
Blancco’s President of Global Sales and Marketing Alan Bentley says this partnership will encourage more companies to consider asset reuse instead of recycling.
“By providing companies with visibility into the real value of their outdated, unused IT assets, we believe more organizations will be willing to work with ITAD refurbishers like CO2Neutral rather than destroy and dispose. They not only gain the financial rewards that come from a reuse and recycling program but also improve their reputations as good corporate citizens who are working to protect our increasingly fragile environment,” Bentley says.
CO2Neutral’s Manager of Partner Programs Jeff Glover says working with Blancco fits perfectly with the company’s sustainability goals and climate protection efforts.
“The calculator we developed will help ensure businesses receive top dollar value for trading in old IT assets for reuse and give them the ability to earn verified carbon credits. All while helping them realize the massive reputational benefits that come from acting as good corporate citizens. Recycling and reusing end-of-life IT equipment is a win for our customers and the environment,” Glover says.
Blancco was established in 1997 to help organizations safely erase data and maintain data secure. It offers an audit trail for data erasure, as well as insurance, buy-back and trade-in to find the most reusable equipment for each client.
CO2Neutral is the first ITAD provider to offer carbon credits globally through equipment refurbishment. Helping businesses reduce their environmental impact and carbon footprint.
