The Brussels-based Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) says the preregistration attendance figure for its 2023 World Recycling Convention in May in Amsterdam is breaking all records in the 75-year history of the organization.
As of early May, BIR says it has more than 1,300 delegates registered for the May 21-24 event. It is being billed as the 75th anniversary edition of the BIR World Recycling Convention & Exhibition, with BIR saying the conference is “built on 75 years of recycling advocacy and global business networking.”
BIR is advising those still interested in the conference that “only 200 registrations (members only) are still left,” and that on-site registrations will not be accepted because of size limitations at the venue, the Hotel Okura in Amsterdam.
The Welcome Evening at the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam is sold out.
The global recycling organization also has announced one of the usual co-hosts of its “The Challenge” panel discussions, Mark Sellier of Hong Kong-based Global Metals Network, will be unable to attend the convention. His fellow panelists, Michael Lion of Hong Kong-based Everwell Resources and Murat Bayram, who works from Germany for United Kingdom-based EMR Ltd., will be joined by guest panelist John Sacco, president of California-based Sierra International Machinery.
Sacco also is the producer of a documentary series called “Repurposed,” which focuses on the many aspects of global recycling and how it has become an essential part of how economies and societies function.
A guest of “The Challenge” panelists in Amsterdam will be Uwe Schmidt, chief commercial officer and a board member of Austria-based copper producer Montanwerke Brixlegg AG. “The Challenge” discussion will take place May 22 at the convention site.

An elevated cab is one of several features improving operational efficiency at the Macon County Solid Waste Management agency in North Carolina. When it comes to waste management, efficiency, safety and reliability are priorities driving decisions from day one, according to staff members of the Macon County Solid Waste Management Department in western North Carolina. The agency operates a recycling plant in a facility originally designed to bale incoming materials. More recently, the building has undergone significant transformations centered around one machine: a SENNEBOGEN telehandler (telescopic handler).
