BIR elects new president

Ranjit Baxi has been elected to the two-year post during the association’s World Convention & Exhibition in Dubai.

The Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) has elected Ranjit Singh Baxi, chairman of J&H Sales (International) Ltd., its new president. Baxi will serve a two-year term as president of the Brussels-based recycling association with the possibility of the term being extended one time.

In 2011, Baxi was appointed BIR’s treasurer. From 2007-2013 Baxi was president of the BIR’s Paper Division; he presently is honorary president of the Paper Division.

Baxi, who has been a guest speaker at a host of recycling-related conferences, has received a host of accolades, including receiving the Queen’s Award for Enterprise (International Trade) in 2001 and being voted Asian of The Year in 2008. He also was awarded “The Propeller Award for Innovation” at the TVE Global Sustainability Film Awards 2013, hosted by China’s Propeller TV.

In his opening address, Baxi thanked his predecessor Björn Grufman for his efforts over the past four years and expressed appreciation for being named president. “BIR has profiled itself as the sole truly international recycling federation. I am honored to be serving its 800-plus member companies and national recycling federations in the coming years.”

Baxi’s company, J & H Sales is based in the United Kingdom. The company is most widely known as a large exporter of recovered fiber. The company also exports scrap plastics and scrap metal.
