Dr. Edwin Basson, director general of the World Steel Association (Worldsteel), and Ismail Al-Sulby, general manager of the Long Products Business Unit of Saudi Basic Industries Corp. (SABIC), will offer presentations at the BIR (Bureau of International Recycling [www.bir.org]) Ferrous Division meeting at the 2015 World Recycling Convention in Dubai on May 18, 2015.
Basson will be sharing his views on the importance of “Steel in the circular economy.” Worldsteel represents about 170 steel producers (including nine of the world’s 10 largest steel companies); national and regional steel industry associations; and steel research institutes. Worldsteel members represent about 85 percent of global steel production.
In addition to his position at SABIC, Al-Sulby is a vice chairman in the Arab Iron and Steel Union and is a board member of Eastern Petrochemical Company. Through its manufacturing affiliate, Saudi Iron and Steel Company (Hadeed, which bills itself as the largest integrated complex for iron and steel production in the Middle East), SABIC produces long and flat steel products.
Apart from the two presentations and market reports from divisional board members, the meeting will introduce the sixth edition of the Division’s statistical brochure “World Steel Recycling in Figures.” Key findings of the brochure will be presented by BIR Statistical Advisor Rolf Willeke.
