BioLogiQ bio-based polymer receives USDA certification

The NuPlastiQ polymer made from excess potato starch is part of the USDA BioPreferred Program.

BioLogiQ Inc., a bioplastic resin manufacturing company headquartered in Idaho Falls, Idaho, has announced that its NuPlastiQ GP biopolymer is now part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA’s) BioPreferred Program and has earned the right to carry and use the USDA 100 percent Certified Bio-based Product label.

Managed by the USDA, the goal of the BioPreferred program is to increase the purchase and use of bio-based products, generating economic development, creating new jobs and providing new markets for farm commodities.

NuPlastiQ GP (GP) is a 100 percent natural, renewably resourced, plant-based resin made from the excess starch produced and usually discarded during potato processing. When GP is blended with traditional plastics, the recyclability, compostability or biodegradability of the traditional plastic is also maintained or enhanced, the company says.

"Being recognized by the USDA as a 100 percent bio-based product will help with our efforts to reduce global material usage and greenhouse gas emissions,” Brad LaPray, president and founder of BioLogiQ, says. “It will also help advance both recycling and composting efforts for a wide variety of products and packages. Importantly, those who use our products will now be able to share the fact that they, too, are using bio-based products in their formulations."
