Bulk Handling Systems (BHS ), based in Eugene, Ore., is installing a custom, highly automated, dual-function sorting system for a new material recovery facility (MRF) Casepak is opening in Leicester, U.K. The system will process 150,000 metric tons of recyclables per year and is on track to become operational in September, according to BHS.
“This is an exciting time for us,” says Mark Smith, joint managing director at Casepak. “Once the facility becomes fully operational, it will more than double the quantity of material that Casepak can handle as well as increase the number and type of materials that can be processed.”
Casepak Chairman George Smith adds, “We’ve been recycling plastics now for the last decade and developing a MRF with full multi-material capacity was the natural next step.”
The system incorporates the latest in patented screening, air and optical sorting technology designed to maximize the recovery and purity of secondary commodities and to minimize waste, BHS says. The system will process mixed collections of paper, cardboard, plastic, metal and glass, recovering 95 percent or more of the material processed, BHS says.
The system features patented BHS screens, including the enhanced BHS De-Inking Screen, a mixed fiber optical unit, a film handling system and a full optical container line for plastics recovery, according to BHS.
The Casepak facility builds on the technological expertise gained by partner company SCA Recycling following the launch of its Southampton, U.K., MRF in 2009, which also features a BHS processing system.
“The new facility will allow us to provide our customers with a wider waste and resource management solution for both the municipal and commercial and industrial (C&I) sectors,” Smith says. “We also anticipate that the business waste sector will grow, as government demands that they recycle more of their waste. Our new MRF will help to meet this increased demand, at the same time providing invaluable investment for the local area.”
BHS CEO Steve Miller says, “All of us at BHS are extremely excited to be working with the team at Casepak. Our design engineers have developed a system that will be among the most technologically sophisticated in the world and will place Casepak at the forefront of recycling.”
Casepak is jointly owned by G.A.E Smith (Holdings) Ltd. and SCA Recycling UK Ltd.
BHS is a supplier of processing systems for the solid waste, recycling, wood products/compost and waste-to-energy industries. More information is available at www.bulkhandlingsystems.com.
