An explosion at a Beta Steel Corp. mill in Portage, Ind., has reportedly left one worker dead and two others critically injured.
According to an Associated Press (AP) report, the Jan. 7, 2010, explosion killed one worker and injured four others, two of whom were described by a fire chief as “walking wounded.”
The AP report cites the Portage fire chief as pointing to water meeting up with molten steel as a possible cause of the explosion at the electric arc furnace (EAF) mill. The dead and injured have each suffered from burns as a result of the explosion, according to the report.
