Bayou Steel’s Mississippi River Recycling facility will be taking in 5,000 automobiles damaged by Hurricane Katrina. The program was organized by Progressive Auto Insurance.
While environmental officials said that the automobiles could be decontaminated by washing with soap and water or a combination of water and bleach, the insurance company decided to scrap the vehicles it had insured.
"The reasons are simple," said Juan Andrade, claims general manager for the region. "We don't want our people working around those cars and we don't want them back on the road."
The vehicles will be crushed and then shredded at the Mississippi River plant. The metal will then be sold as scrap and melted.
