The Basel Action Network (BAN), Seattle, a human and environmental rights organization, has expanded its e-Stewards Global Impact Calculator app to the Android platform. The calculator previously was available only for iPhones and iPads. The expansion opens up the app to more than 5,600 Android devices, according to BAN, and is free to download on Google Play and on Apple’s App store.
BAN says the app shows consumers how using an e-Stewards certified electronics recycler will improve the environment and resource conservation in three critical areas:
- greenhouse gas avoidance;
- toxic metals diverted from export, dumping or disposal; and
- valuable metals diverted from landfill or disposal.
BAN, with the assistance of industry leaders, environmental organizations and technical experts, developed the e-Stewards Certified Recycling program, which seeks to ensure the responsible recycling of electronic scrap.
The organization says consumers and corporate customers of e-Stewards certified recyclers are assured these recyclers are audited to a rigorous standard. Now, with the new app, e-Stewards Certified Recyclers can quantify some of those environmental benefits, the organization says.
In related news, earlier this year BAN introduced the e-Stewards Marketplace—an online trading platform where businesses post their e-scrap inventories and a closed group of e-Stewards certified recyclers can bid on the material. The new online platform ensures competitive pricing while maintaining the highest standards of electronic recycling, BAN claims.
