Balcones Recycling has changed its name to Circular Services, which calls itself the largest privately held recycling company and circular economy service provider in the United States.

The name change was announced in a LinkedIn post dated June 28.

Despite the name change, the company says its mission remains the same: “To build a truly circular economy by helping businesses and municipalities eliminate landfill disposal costs and recover valuable materials for reuse. From food and organics to packaging and beyond, we're proud to keep materials in circulation and out of landfills.

“Together, we’re building resilient, sustainable systems that deliver meaningful environmental and economic impact across the country.”

Closed Loop Partners (CLP), a New York-based investment firm focused on building the circular economy, acquired a majority stake in Austin, Texas-based Balcones Resources through its private equity fund, the Closed Loop Leadership Fund, in the fall of 2019.

Balcones was founded in 1994 by Kerry Getter and his wife, Becky. Kerry Getter stayed with the company as CEO until mid-2022, at which time he retired, and Closed Loop Partners increased its 80 percent ownership stake in the company to 100 percent.

In late 2023, Balcones merged with New York-based Sims Municipal Recycling, which CLP acquired in 2022, forming Balcones Recycling and launching a new website and branding to reflect the change. The Circular Services holding company was formed in 2022 as well.

Under CLP ownership, Balcones acquired Single Stream Recyclers (SSR) of Sarasota, Florida, in late 2020.

Circular Services went on to acquire other recycling facilities, including Midwest Fiber Recycling, which operated under the Balcones Recycling name, as well as Waste Recycling of Alabama and Quantum Organics in Connecticut.

Balcones opened a MRF in San Antonio last June, and, earlier this year, Circular Services broke ground on a 120,000-square-foot, $61 million recycling facility in Frisco, Texas, that will serve Frisco, McKinney and the surrounding Dallas metroplex area. The company has 26 locations that provide materials management services to municipalities and businesses across the country.
