Azek Building Products, a Chicago-area decking products manufacturer, has opened a 100,000-square-foot facility in Wilmington, Ohio, to produce composite deck boards from recycled plastics. The company has invested $25 million in the facility.
Under the TimberTech name, the facility will produce composite Pro and Edge deck boards, which are both made using 100 percent recycled plastic.
The company says it expects to recycle more than 55 million pounds of polyethylene (PE) through the summer. Further, Azek says its short-term goal is to recycle 100 million pounds of plastic scrap by next year at the plant. If it reaches that goal, the company will recycle a total of 200 million pounds of plastic scrap across its operations.
The facility will process PE packaging, which includes shampoo bottles, milk jugs, laundry detergent bottles and plastic wrap.
Azek says it is committed to doubling its recycled plastic input by 2020 and has a goal to make 95 percent of TimberTech’s decking from recycled material.
