Chicago-based Azcon Corp., a large regional ferrous scrap processor and trader, has announced the commissioning of a new auto shredding plant at its Alton, Ill., location. The shredder is located near Azcon’s Alton dock on the Mississippi River.
“Our new auto shredding plant is an important part of our overall growth strategy in the Midwest,” says Ronnie Hirsch, COO of Azcon.
Azcon has installed a Wendt 82 Heavy shredder powered by a 4,000 hp motor with the capacity to produce up to 80 tons of shredded scrap per hour.
The plant’s nonferrous downstream system includes dual eddy current separators and metal finders. Environmental features of the auto shredding plant include what the company calls a heavy-duty concrete and asphalt base, a closed-loop air system, and a stormwater treatment system.
“We are committed to providing our customers with the highest-quality feedstock in an environmentally responsible manner,” says Hirsch. New inbound and outbound truck scales and radiation detectors and separate commercial truck lanes also have been installed.
Headquartered in Chicago, Azcon has processing and trading locations in Chicago, Alton, and Sterling, Ill., as well as in Duluth, Minn. and in Pittsburgh, Pa. The company is a division of Blue Tee Corp., an employee-owned industrial holding company.
Other Blue Tee Corp. companies design, manufacture, distribute and service equipment for the earth moving, mining, energy, solid waste and water well industries, and Brown-Strauss Steel is a distributor of wide-flange I-beams and hollow structural sections in the western United States.
