Axion Polymers has announced that it is the first polymer producer in Europe to offer customers a product with the Carbon Reduction Label - Axpoly PS13, indicating a post-consumer recycled polystyrene derived from retail packaging waste. The designation was given to the company by Carbon Trust, a non-profit company that seeks to accelerate the move to a low carbon economy.
The plastics recycler, based in the United Kingdom, received the PAS 2050 certification and the Carbon Trust’s labeling in June following an evaluation of Axion’s Axpoly PS13’s carbon footprint.
Axpoly PS13 is made from recovered hangers and generates 17 percent of the emissions associated with oil-based virgin polymer.
To achieve the certification, Axion’s staff took part in training courses at the Carbon Trust on specialist carbon calculation software that enabled them to complete a full ‘cradle to gate’ life-cycle analysis on its operations and those of its raw material supplier. The firm has committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 10 percent in 2012 and 15 percent by 2015.
