South Carolina city opts to expand recycling program

Greenville, South Carolina, will provide larger bins and use automated collection trucks.

The City Council of Greenville, South Carolina, has approved an operating budget that includes funding for new, 90-gallon recycling collection bins and new automated collection trucks.

 

According to a report from WHNS TV in Greenville, the expenses are part of a $168 million operating budget for 2016 that was the city council unanimously approved.

 

The city has chosen to spend up to $3 million toward the purchase of 90-gallon recycling carts and new trash bins to be placed at 18,000 single-family homes.

 

Residents will be able to recycle aluminum and steel cans, plastic bottles and paper in one bin, according to the WHNS report. Additional types of plastic also will be accepted. The larger containers and commingled collection also may increase the program’s participation rate beyond its current 48 percent, according to the report.
