ASPAPEL, the Spanish Association of Pulp and Paper Manufacturers based in Madrid, reports that Spain likely recycled about 1 percent more paper from the Christmas season compared with the previous year’s Christmas season.
According to a news release from ASPAPEL, about 872,000 metric tons of paper should be collected in December and January, which corresponds to about 20 percent of the total amount of paper collected during the whole year. For private households, the tendency of past years shows that the Christmas period stretches from previous sales such as Black Friday to the following January clearances. In the retail segment, the association reports that growth in paper for recycling generation is distributed over December and January.
ASPAPEL reports that the Spanish paper industry recycled about 5 million metric tons of paper in 2018.
