Crude stainless steel production rose by 6.3 percent in the first quarter of 2004 compared to the same quarter in 2003, according to the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF), Brussels. Total global production in the first quarter of 2004 was 6.1 million metric tons.
Asia again showed the strongest growth. Its 2.9 million metric tons produced was nearly a 15 percent jump in production over the first quarter of 2003. China and South Korea were responsible for most of the growth.
Production in Western Europe and Africa declined by 1.7 percent, to 2.4 million metric tons. The decline was influenced by strikes at two major stainless steel mills during the first quarter, the ISSF notes. Production in Eastern Europe declined by 7.1 percent compared to the first quarter of 2003.
North and South America increased its stainless crude steel production by 5.3 percent to 0.7 million metric tons.
