Pratt & Whitney PSD, based in Springdale, Arkansas, has been named 2014 Corporate Recycler of the Year by the Arkansas Recycling Coalition (ARC).

The award is intended to honor a corporation that has made a significant contribution to the advancement of waste reduction, recycling and sustainability.

Pratt & Whitney PSD’s pollution prevention team has reduced industrial process waste by 73 percent since 2011 by diverting waste streams, including office paper and scrap metal. The facility’s efforts are part of a larger companywide initiative at Pratt & Whitney to recycle 100 percent of its materials and eliminate industrial process waste as part of the company’s goals to improve the sustainability of its factories, suppliers and products by 2025.

“The strong commitment at our Arkansas facility to reducing our environmental impact is remarkable,” says Matthew Bromberg, Pratt & Whitney’s aftermarket president. “Industrywide, only a small fraction of aircraft engine material worldwide is recycled and returned for use. However, leaders like Pratt & Whitney PSD are making huge inroads to improve the amount of material that is recycled instead of discarded. We are proud of their contributions toward reducing Pratt & Whitney’s overall environmental footprint.”

Says Mike Finan, Pratt & Whitney PSD’s general manager, “The Pollution Prevention initiative is truly a team effort within our facility. All of our employees are engaged and feel a strong sense of ownership in the goal to reduce our impact on the environment, and this award is a testament to that culture.”

Pratt & Whitney PSD was recognized during the ARC’s 24th Annual Conference and Trade Show, held Sept. 29-Oct. 1 in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
