Arkansas House Committee Passes Polystyrene Recycling Bill

Bill was introduced into committee in early February.

A bill that addresses recycling of polystyrene plastics in Arkansas has passed the Arkansas House of Representatives’ City, County & Local Affairs Committee House, and has been engrossed into the full house.

House Bill 1465 has been sponsored by Rep. Kathy Webb (D). It passed the house committee March 1. It has not yet been decided what Senate committee will hear testimony on the bill.

The bill requires landfills in the state to offer recycling opportunities for polystyrene. As it stands right now the bill calls for the Arkansas Pollution Control and Ecology Commission to adopt reasonable regulations which are protective of the public health and environment for the storage, collection, reuse, or recycling of polystyrene by a solid waste disposal site or facility that is permitted under the Arkansas Solid Waste Management Act. The requirements will come into play Dec. 31, 2008.

The bill calls for waste management districts to provide polystyrene recycling to its residents.
