Arizona City Considers Adding Glass to Program

Glass looks to be added to Flagstaff's curbside collection program.

The city of Flagstaff, Ariz., is expected to vote on a resolution to spend $74,000 from the city’s Public Works Fund to purchase 5,000 35-gallon bins for glass. The money would be a 50 percent match on $148,000 the city is expected to receive from the state of Arizona’s Department of Environmental Quality.

Through the city’s curbside collection program Arizona has diverted around 200 tons of recyclables a year away from the landfill. The program has been in place for around 15 years.

One problem with the program has been that glass could not be mixed with the other recyclables and had to be hauled to the center or other drop off sites throughout the city.

According to the city staff report, glass recycling has been "continuously hampered" by illegal dumping, broken glass around the drop-off sites and changes in property ownership that forced the sites to be closed or moved.

The program started with seven drop-off sites. Now there are three and one is at the city landfill, the report said. Arizona Daily Sun
