As part of the agreement, DTE will implement a pilot project at a selected Arconic facility in North America leveraging DTE’s advanced LP-LIBS (liquid-phase laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy) analyzer for furnace applications, which provides real-time chemical composition analysis of the molten aluminum, enabling precise process control and increased throughput, profitability and quality, according to the company. Its LP-LIBS technology integrates with DTE’s IRIS Platform to deliver what the company says is instant elemental analysis and impurity detection. The platform is designed to give manufacturers comprehensive analytics and real-time data visibility, enabling immediate, informed decision-making to optimize energy use, improve scrap use and enhance safety through automated sampling.
This pilot is the next step in the collaboration initiated through a memorandum of understanding the companies signed in October 2024.
The collaboration is being coordinated by the Arconic Technology Center (ATC) near Pittsburgh, which will evaluate the potential for broader deployment of DTE’s technology across Arconic’s global manufacturing footprint when the pilot is completed.
“At Arconic, we are constantly exploring cutting-edge solutions to enhance manufacturing efficiency and product quality,” says Shawn Sullivan, ATC managing director. “Collaborating with DTE aligns with our commitment to leveraging advanced technologies to optimize operations. DTE’s real-time molten metal analysis capabilities present a significant opportunity to increase manufacturing efficiency and product quality while optimizing the utilization of scrap and recycled materials. We are eager to see the impact and assess further integration of DTE’s solutions across our facilities.”
“We are excited to launch this strategic collaboration with Arconic, a leader in the global aluminum industry,” says DTE CEO Jakob Ásmundsson. “This partnership marks a major milestone for DTE as we work to drive innovation and optimize manufacturing processes within Arconic’s global operations. Arconic’s expertise in metallurgy and dedication to technological advancement make them an ideal partner. We look forward to demonstrating the impact of our solutions on manufacturing efficiency and quality. We’re confident that DTE’s solutions will bring significant value to Arconic’s operations. Looking ahead, we expect our technology to play a key role in boosting throughput and optimizing scrap utilization—delivering meaningful reductions in carbon footprint while driving profitability.”
