Global crude steel production increases in April

China’s production increases 12.7 percent year over year.


World crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (Worldsteel), Brussels, was 156.7 million metric tons in April 2019, a 6.4 percent increase compared with April 2018.

China’s crude steel production for the month increased 12.7 percent relative to April 2018, with the country producing 85 million metric tons.

Crude steel production in Ukraine grew by 12.6 percent year over year, with the country producing 1.9 million metric tons in April 2019.

The U.S. also saw its production increase in April 2019 compared with April 2018. The country’s steel mills churned out 7.4 million metric tons in April, which was 7.3 percent more than it produced during the same month in 2018.

Turkey’s crude steel production for April 2019 was 3 million metric tons, a 2.6 increase compared with April 2018.

South Korea’s crude steel production stood at 6 million metric tons in April 2019, a 1.4 percent increase year over year.

India saw a 1.5 percent increase in its crude steel production in April 2019, having produced 8.8 million metric tons.

Those countries that saw their crude steel production decrease year over year in April 2019 include Japan, which produced 0.8 percent less at 8.6 million metric tons; Italy, which produced 5.7 percent less at 2 million metric tons; France, which produced 8.1 percent less at 1.3 million metric tons; Spain, which produced 4.4 percent less steel at 1.3 million metric tons; and Brazil, which produced 1.9 percent less at 2.9 million metric tons.
