Appliance recycling center opens in Ohio

American Electric Power recently commemorated the opening of a new appliance recycling facility in Groveport, Ohio. The facility was built and is being operated by JACO Environmental, Mill Creek, Washington, and has been designed to handle refrigerators and freezers. At the facility JACO removes the hazardous materials, reclaiming roughly 95 percent of the materials in the appliances.

AEP’s role in the program is to deliver older, less efficient appliances to the facility. AEP says that since it launched its appliance recycling program in 2009 it has collected for recycling more than 72,000 appliances.

“This new recycling facility not only increases our ability to keep up with demand but it [also] demonstrates our dedication to Ohio’s energy efficiency efforts,” says Deanna Gilliland, AEP Ohio program manager. “With a simple phone call, our customers can schedule a free pickup of their appliance, save money, help the environment and, for a limited time, receive an increased $60 incentive for choosing to recycle.”

AEP is offering $60 payment to residents through Aug. 30, 2014. To participate in the program, AEP Ohio customers can call 877-545-4112 or visit www.AEPOhio.com/WasteLess. The program is limited to the removal of two units per household. Appliances to be recycled must be in working order, with inside measurements between 10 and 30 cubic feet—the standard sizes for most models.
