Andritz, headquartered in Graz, Austria, has signed a cooperation agreement with the German battery recycling company Duesenfeld, which will license its patented processes, including deep discharging and low-temperature drying.
Andritz will act as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) or the engineering, procurement and supply (EPS) contractor, responsible for delivering the recycling plant and key equipment, such as shredders and dryers. The company also will provide service and supply spare and wear parts.
With its patented processes, Duesenfeld achieves a material recovery rate in excess of 90 percent while significantly reducing CO₂ emissions, Andritz says. In 2024, the company was awarded the German Sustainability Award.
“This partnership marks a major step forward in the circular economy, combining advanced expertise, innovative technology and long-standing experience in plant engineering to provide comprehensive solutions for our customers," Duesenfeld Chief Technology Officer Till Bussmann says.
The collaboration positions Andritz and Duesenfeld as partners for the mechanical pretreatment of lithium-ion batteries, especially in the production of black mass, and aims to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of battery recycling processes, contributing to a circular economy.
Andritz plans to upgrade the Duesenfeld pilot plant in Wendeburg, Germany, with equipment, including state-of-the-art shredders and dryers, showcasing the combined expertise and innovative solutions offered by both companies.
“We are excited to join forces with Duesenfeld and leverage our combined strengths to drive innovation in battery recycling,” says Thomas Gemeiner, vice president of recycling at Andritz. “This partnership underscores our commitment to providing economically viable, cutting-edge solutions that support a sustainable future, especially when it comes to reducing CO2 emissions.”
