Dr. Khaled Fahmy, Egypt’s minister of environment, and Essam Bedewy, the governor of Menya, Eypt, were among the attendees of a tour of the new recycling facility in Edwa city within the Minya governorate in Egypt.
The facility, which was engineered and built by Italy-based Amut Ecotech, is considered one of the most advanced municipal recycling facilities in Egypt and is a result of the ongoing cooperation between the Italian Egyptian Debt for Development Swap Program, the Ministry of Environment and the United Nations Development Programmer (UNDP) with the scope of upgrading and improving solid waste management in Minya governorate, according to Tarek Younes, the UNDP project manager, who visited the plant 6 April 2017.
Potential investors were invited to the visit as part of the project plan to tender the facility’s future operation. Amut Ecotech, the recycling division of Amut Group, has supplied the Minya Governorate a municipal solid waste recycling facility. The plant is planned to go into operation by June 2017.
Amut Ecotech was awarded the public tender issued by UNDP Solid Waste Management in the Minya project in 2016. The project is financed by the Italian Egyptian Debt for Development Swap Program based on a commercial agreement between the Italian and Egyptian republics. The plant represents a pilot scheme that will be replicated in other rural governorates to upgrade overall management of municipal waste and recyclables across the country.
The plant has been designed to reduce the volume of waste to send to landfill, maximize quantity and quality of recyclables recovered, produce a quality refuse-derived fuel (RDF) product in terms of calorific value and achieve a favorable ratio between plant production and investment costs, Amut Ecotech says.
The facility is designed to segregate 300 short tons per day of municipal material by type. The dry material will be processed to recover recyclables for sale and to produce RDF to be used as source of fuel in cement factories. The organic material will be biologically treated to produce compost intended for agricultural applications.
