Texas-based Americas Styrenics LLC (AmSty), a producer of styrene, polystyrene (PS) and recycled-content polystyrene, provides an overview of its recycling activities in its newly released 2024 sustainability report, “Building Momentum.”
“Sustainability is central to everything we do,” AmSty President and CEO Dr. Randy Pogue says. “The title of this report reflects the significant sustainability progress we’re making in our operations and in scaling up advanced recycling technology and processes.”
In 2023, on the recycling front, the company focused on collaboration with stakeholders to bring advanced recycling to scale and ensure it is recognized as an important part of the overall solution for addressing discarded plastic.
The firm has been pursuing and obtaining International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS certifications and branding licenses, along with engaging in sales of circular PS and styrene to customers in a variety of industries.
AmSty also says it is leading the industry in the launch of the Polystyrene Recycling Alliance (PSRA) to improve recycling access across the United States.
“This report highlights the momentum we’ve created in our short history and the positive steps we've taken to promote sustainability for a better future,” says Richard Shaw, AmSty’s director of sustainability and circular economy.
“It also recognizes the contributions of our leaders, employees, contractors, customers and other stakeholders who play an important role in our sustainability journey and share our vision to reduce, and eventually eliminate, plastic waste in landfills."
In the report, AmSty refers to its memorandum of understanding to purchase up to 125,000 tons of circular feedstocks created via a solvent-based chemical recycling technique at plants operated by Texas-based Encina Development Group. AmSty says Encina intends to ramp up its production capacity over time.
On the mechanical recycling front, AmSty writes, “We expect to bring online several mechanical recycling projects in 2024 and beyond to continue expanding recycling capacity, meeting customer demand for recycled PS and showcasing the variety of technologies available to support the circular economy.”
